El clavecín es el precursor del pianoforte y, por ende, del piano moderno y del piano de cola. Tanto el clavecín como el pianoforte ocupan un lugar propio en la jerarquía de los instrumentos de teclado.

Entre 1580 y 1780, el clavecín desempeñó un papel destacado en la vida musical de ciudadanos y compositores. Famosos compositores barrocos como Bach, Handel, Purcell, Vivaldi y Rameau tocaron y compusieron con el clavecín. Hacia 1800, el pianoforte suplantó definitivamente al clavecín. El pianoforte inspiró a compositores como Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven y Schubert.
